Caption: Authoritarian Funnies. This week: "Kettling." During protests at Trump's inauguration, police used a tactic called "kettling": Rounding up a whole city block to make mass arrests. Anyone on the same block as a rioter is probably guilty of something. Now hundreds face felony charges call it the "trawling" approach to justice. Catch of the day! Journalist. Peaceful protester. Legal observer. Set garbage can on fire. It's like rounding up everyone at the supermarket because somebody slipped turkey bacon down his pants. If you're so innocent, what were you doing in the meat department? Why not apprehend entire cities? You are all under arrest for bank robbery! Justice served! Police line. Do not cross.

Caption: The University of Chicago Guide to Free Speech. Some clarifications to our recent letter mandating "freedom of expression" on campus. Are you from a dominant social group saying "politically incorrect" things? That is speech. We'll protect it! Are you from a minority group protesting something said by the previous group? That was racist. ! Proceed with caution, you coddled millennial. Are you an invited speaker to whom we are paying a hefty fee, and also a war criminal/online harasser/extreme bigot/anti-science kook? We've got your back! Want to peacefully protest your university granting legitimacy to this person? Disinvite the bigot. Sorry, voicing that opinion is not speech. We are VERY, VERY concerned about "trigger warnings." (Shout out to right-wing donors!) Yeah! But, no need to mention the problem of campus sexual assault. Are you an LGBT student looking for a place where you don't have to worry about being harassed? Sorry, no "safe spaces," you wimps! Wait, we have those already? Oops.

Caption: Moment of Reckoning. I spent the days leading up to the convention listening to people criticize Hillary from the left and the right. Corporate shill! Warmonger! Benghazi! Criminal! Email! I have mixed feelings about Clinton, but it seems there's a loss of perspective. Those emails risked out national security! Um ... Have you not noticed that her opponent is kissing Putin's ass?! Watching Obama's speech in the convention hall, I couldn't help but think how fundamentally similar he and Hillary are in substance, if not style. And I must say, it was nice to see some people genuinely excited about the first female presidential nominee. I accept you nomination. Woooooooo!

Caption: The New Normal. The country has gone off the deep end, and it's mostly business as usual. Republicans say Obama can't nominate anyone to the Supreme Court. Punditspew. This will be quite a game of hardball! Things keep getting weirder, but we still treat the election as a horse race. And today the GOP frontrunner fired rubber bullets into a crowd of cheering fans! Even the people who were hit LOVED it! That'll play well in Plano! Sometimes it seems like nothing will break the facade. I will abolish the IRS and see revenue solely through plunder! Perkins is controversial, but his message is winning! Perkins 2020. Are there ANY limits to this farce? I will not deploy my army of nanobots into the bloodstreams of the non-white. Hmm ... that's a little extreme. Careful! Let's not violate the new libel laws!

Sound advice, considering the GOP's "serious job creation idea" will create 35 permanent jobs. Keystone XL. Help not wanted. In Iowa, we put plastic bread bags over our shoes to keep them dry. Also good for protecting feet from oils spills! Bus. What you'll be doing after Obama's community college plan is blocked. Uh ... No way I can afford college on this wage!

Go back to where you came from. I believe in free speech and am horrified by the killings. And I believe the cartoons were hurtful and Islamophobic, and will help terrorist recruitment. Caption: A Cycle of Sadness. Crazy extremists threaten death for blasphemous cartoons against religion X. How dare you insult the prophet? Cartoonists exercise their free speech rights to draw blasphemous cartoons. Terrorists attack, killing cartoonists and several others. Even though mainstream religion X-ers find the cartoons offensive, they condemn the massacre. The terrorists are not us. These killings are against our beliefs! People conflate the two groups anyway. Houses of worship are attacked. Blam! Blam! Some cartoonists and other commentators take things to new extremes. Take that, religion X-ers! Extremist politicians thrive, further alienating minorities. More violent extremists emerge.

I'm turning my back on this quiz! Congrats, you've failed the quiz and the people of New York!

Caption: Let's Talk About Checks. The Paycheck Fairness Act would forbid bosses from punishing workers for talking about their salaries. How much do they pay you, Al? Bweep! Bweep! Step away from the cubicle. If women can't discuss wages with their colleagues, how are they supposed to find out they're getting screwed? New Paycheck Spex! See through envelopes. Al Beene. 2141. Two thousand and ... Hire an unequal-fortune teller. I'm getting visions of $11,000/year more, for slightly inferior work. Try reasoning with your boss. So, when you donate to political campaigns, it's "free speech," but when I speak about money, it isn't? You're fired.

Caption: Get Your Words' Worth. John Roberts on campaign finance: The government may no more restrict how many candidates a donor may support than it may tell a newspaper how many candidates it may endorse. Like, duh! So, dollars are equivalent to words, which makes exactly as much sense in reverse. That'll be three pronouns, please. As the owner of a large book collection worth billions of words, would you consider donating some to my campaign? Vote me. Of course, Roberts isn't very good at recognizing absurdity. I'm just saying money talks, so it's not corrupting. What's so hard to understand here?

Caption: Color Blind. Obama gave an eloquent speech about Trayvon Martin, who almost certainly would stull be alive had he not been black. Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago. Right-Wing pundits went nuts online. @DanRiehl. If you ever had any doubts, Obama is the first Racist in Chief. If only Twitter had existed in the past ... I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin bit the content of their character. @FossilBlowhard. MLK is making this all about race. All. About. Race. Cleveland Ave. @RockingChairWarrior. It's not about race, Rosa. It's about courtesy. #shame. #troublemaker. Abolition NOW! Caption: The fate of the economy now hinges on the unhinged. If our demands aren't met, we're takin' this whole f#@!*&n' popsicle stand down! Of course, they're just obeying the founding fathers. Patrick Henry's famous "chicken speech". I do believe that a game of chicken is the wisest manner in which to settle a major policy dispute. Lincoln routinely spoke wrapped in explosives. And if you heed not my words, we shall all verily go up in flames. Some may recall the famous "Schoolhouse Rock" animation about this. I'm just a bill ... A Republican bill ... And if I don't pass, say goodbye to your ass ...
