Caption: Cults of America. This week: The Market Liberation Army. The M.L.A. is led by the charismatic Charles Mansion, who claims to channel the late economist Milton Friedman. Free your trade and your soul will follow! Members live in a compound called Dow-Jonestown, where they are indoctrined with market fundamentalism. How do we know what to do, O chosen one? Talk to the hand ... the invisible hand! Let it lift your spirit and guide you in the ways of the holy profits. They develop paranoia about those on the outside. The evil minions of the anti-hand are everywhere. We must fight their public schools and post offices! These raiments made from Wall Street Journal editorial pages will protect us from their Socialism rays! Tyranny of the Poor. Reagan lives. Any skepticism is quickly quashed. I've been thinking bad thoughts, o chose one ... like maybe we should do something about global warm - Hush! The market works in mysterious ways. But it will always love you.

Caption: The University of Chicago Guide to Free Speech. Some clarifications to our recent letter mandating "freedom of expression" on campus. Are you from a dominant social group saying "politically incorrect" things? That is speech. We'll protect it! Are you from a minority group protesting something said by the previous group? That was racist. ! Proceed with caution, you coddled millennial. Are you an invited speaker to whom we are paying a hefty fee, and also a war criminal/online harasser/extreme bigot/anti-science kook? We've got your back! Want to peacefully protest your university granting legitimacy to this person? Disinvite the bigot. Sorry, voicing that opinion is not speech. We are VERY, VERY concerned about "trigger warnings." (Shout out to right-wing donors!) Yeah! But, no need to mention the problem of campus sexual assault. Are you an LGBT student looking for a place where you don't have to worry about being harassed? Sorry, no "safe spaces," you wimps! Wait, we have those already? Oops.

Caption: Trumping Our Safety. I alone can keep America safe! So you'll do something about the coming climate catastrophe? More coal! Air pollution that caused 200,000 premature deaths a year? Weaklings. You'll stand up to Putin? My buddy! Keep our food and water safe? Have I mentioned I like tacos? Fix our crumbling infrastructure? I'll build a wall! Address the 38,000 traffic deaths a year? People should drive bigger cars! So what will you keep safe from? Haven't you heard? An undocumented immigrant killed a girl!

Caption: Four toddlers around the U.S. shot and killed themselves in one week in April. Ammo. Eh, shootin' happens. What would it take to make some people care? Breaking: Toddler finds gun, shoots other guns in dad's collection. At least four weapons dead, including a 2-year-old Magnum and 3-year-old AK-47. NRA Chapter Meeting. Why?? Sniff! Those young guns never had a chance. We must do something! Sadly, it's likely more will be shot. Fine, I'll support trigger locks! RIP Betty Beretta. Anything to stop this madness!

Caption: Algorithm Blues. One fine day in the future Ö Grandma and Grandpa, tell us what the internet was like back in the olden days! Well, we used to do this thing called "surfing the web." We actually visited websites instead of clicking on whatever showed up in our Facebook feeds. Whoa, that sounds wild. But how would you share what you found? Believe it or not, we sometimes read things and kept our opinions to ourselves. Wait, so you would discover stuff on your own and not post about it? Honey, let me tell you about something called print media. Wow, that was interesting. I'm glad my algorithm recommended it.

Caption: Captains of Industry Speak! On offshoring: If you love something, set it free. That's why we're setting 3,000 jobs free, like gazelles, to bound to new and exotic points of the compass! Just imagine: Data entry under a Calcutta moon! Guangdong cam. Bangalore cam. On downsizing: We had to cut 1,500 jobs, or else we couldn't afford my $50 million bonus. It's just the harsh reality of the market! On automation: The Adminidroid 8000 can do most white-collar desk jobs at a fraction of the cost of actual humans! But don't worry - there will be plenty of new jobs in robot maintenance! On raising the minimum wage: Pay more than $7.25 an hour!? NO WAY! Why, we'd have to CUT JOBS! I guess we won't even ask about unions.

Caption: Is there anything else? Have a great new year! Don't call this number again. Good luck to your family. They will need it. Who was this sicko? How did he get my unpublished number? Was he doing this business from the university where he had just been hired as the dean of students? The fact that he called me at all was an act of aggression. He was a stranger interloping ... reminding me he was still around ... still showing me who was boss ... This time, I had to do something. But what? ? (This is a long form cartoon. Caption: What I remember is Carl taking my arm, and walking with him outside the student union to my apartment. I feel so strange Ö I don't know how he knew where I lived. Maybe I guided us back. I remember feeling relieved that someone was helping me get to my place, a place of safety. Memories remain in cinematic flashes. The next thing I recall is sitting on my sofa, Carl in front of me removing my clothes. Let's get these off. I recall feeling embarrassed that I was naked and that my underarms stank. He said something about a bath. (This is a long form cartoon. To see next panels, use "Image Number" box at left and enter 124878.)

Caption: I sat down, mumbled something in return. Soon my fires were ready and I went up to get them. Back at the table, I ate and drank while Carl chattered away. Suddenly, I panicked. I felt weird in the head. It was like nothing I'd ever felt before. I'd smoked pot less than a handful of times, tried LSD once - this was unlike either high, and out-of-body swirly sensation. I was not able to control my mind. I had trouble forming words. My body felt heavy, and I could not make the decision to get up. Blah blah blah. I thought, "am I having a seizure or a stroke?" Caption: Making a Point. A posh London neighborhood is using spikes to discourage sleeping homeless people. Bloody hell! Now they want to impale us! Spikes aren't necessarily a bad idea if we use them in the right places. Every lot available for the new Wal-mart has these darn things in it. I dunno. These spikes just showed up on all the streets downtown, and cars can't get through! Of course, when earth is no longer habitable and all of humanity is homeless, we may find something familiar ... That one has a good atmosphere, but ... those spikes again! It's almost as if we aren't wanted.

Non-organic strawberries are laden with pesticides. Strawberry. Surely this store will have something. Grandma's Giftplex. Actually, the owners are eccentric billionaires who support stoning gay people. Caption: LEGAL HORSEPLAY. Looking to pass a law that won't fly with the public? Maybe something racist, or otherwise unconstitutional? Trojan Tommy. Attorney-at-Law. Come on down to your Trojan Horse Source! A satisfied customer: I wanted to overturn Roe v. Wade, but Tommy has this great idea about regulating clinics to "protect women's health." Now I just practice looking concerned and leave the rest to him! Another satisfied customer: I wanted to make it harder for minorities to vote. Tommy came up with voter ID laws, which help to prevent those people - I mean, prevent fraud. Genius! The courts are stacked with right-wing judges, so there's no better time. Bill. GIDDYUP!

Caption: Slowpoke. Pundit retraining. Some pundits have a blithe attitude toward decimation of many jobs. These workers need retraining to compete in the 21st century! Creative destruction! Woo! We at slowpoke envision an America in which these windbags find themselves having to start over. Hmm ... need another glowing adjective for Steve Jobs ... Pack up! You've been downsized! Alas, a lifetime of carefully-cultivated abilities goes down the toilet. I've got great skills in platitude creation, with an emphasis on repeating myself. Employment agency. I'm sorry, sir. You've become obsolete. The sudden loss of identity proves difficult. Seafood. Let me tell you something a rickshaw driver in Bangalore taught me about the dynamism of the internet. Tip: For that extra homemade look. keep ball of yarn attached to hat. If you must be cutesy and wear a hat with animal ears, at least try to make it something unorthodox. Bear ears: bo-ring! Caption: Slowpoke. Welcome back to Politics 101 with Professor Perkins. Today we'll be discussing the word "entitlements." This is an actual billboard spotted in Washington State. Should people collecting entitlements be allowed to vote? Note the two possible meanings of "entitlement." Entitlement programs. Your hard work is rewarded later. Sense of entitlement. Spoiled brat who thinks the world owes them something. Calling Social Security an entitlement invites this confusion. What is we called babies entitlements? Doctor, where's my son? Who do you think you are. The queen mother? Just because you gave birth to him doesn't mean your entitled to keep him! Next week: Should people who don't understand entitlements be allowed to vote?

Caption: Slowpoke. Nation Stunned by Display of Competence. Our top story tonight: Millions of Americans are in shock that, after a decade of economic, environmental, and military FUBARS, we managed to do something right. OSAMASHOCK! "Emergency medical technicians are working round the clock to revive dazed and confused citizens." Bin Laden ... DEAD?!? We MUST have screwed the pooch somehow! Have a look at this cost-of-war counter. It'll bring you back to reality. "Dr. Alice Fernweaver, professor of western fubology, argues that killing Bin Laden is not necessarily at odds with our normal bumbling idiocy." The 21st century has been a nonstop series of clusterf#cks and epic fails resulting in the destruction of everything we touched. It was only a matter of time before we destroyed Bin Laden too. "Scientists predict that, at this rate, the next act of competence will occur in the year 2022." Our models indicate that that is the year we may finally stop bombing Afghanistan, or start addressing global warming. If we make it that long.

What we need is greater interfaith dialogue, not hatred. He immediate dominates the cable news cycle. Breaking: Reasonable Religious Leader Calls For Tolerance.
