Caption: Fifty years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. I was living in Alexandria, Virginia. I had lived in Mighigan's Upper Peninsula until March, 1968, and I had never met a black child prior to moving to the D.C. area. When I woke up the morning of April 5, King had died the night before. School was canceled. My dad drove us to Arlington to see Washington burning. Later in the spring of 1968, I saw Resurrection City, a huge plywood encampment on the Mall near the Lincoln Memorial - where King had given the I Have a Dream speech. Everyone remembers the Dream line ... the content of their character ... No one remembers these lines from the same 1969 speech: We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. Hey! Mute! And: Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California. Fifty years is a long time ago. Feels like yesterday.

Caption: Hey boss, it's almost closing time. Mind if I knock off early? I do indeed, minion. It's a slippery slope. If I let you off ten minutes early. The next thing you'd know, you'll be asking for eleven free minutes. And the next thing you'd know, yadda yadda yadda, the courts would be forcing me to pay for your third cousin's foreign-born nanny's uncle's appendectomy. You should really cut down on making these slippery slope arguments. If I did that, the next thing you'd know, the courts would be forcing me to buy everyone a turtle.

Caption: Hey boss, it's almost closing time. Mind if I knock off early? I do indeed, minion. It's a slipper slope. If I let you off ten minutes early, next thing we know you'll be asking for eleven free minutes. Then people will catch wind of it and be asking for time off all over the place. Meanwhile, North Koreans don't ask for time off. They'll be outproducing us. It'll be the end of America. Boss ... are you AirBnB-ing my house again while I'm at work? You can leave here at 5pm and not a minute sooner.

Caption: Earl, good heavens! What happened?! I was leaving the grocery store, taking the empty cart back. Suddenly I noticed a perfect slope in the pavement in front of me. And I had this strong impulse to step on the back of that cart and ride it down the slope! I knew it was a stupid idea, but I couldn't resist. Well, everything happens for a reason. Sometimes the reason is you're a numbskull.

Caption: Months ago, during a special episode of the Ask Sadie show, our resident octogenarian asked readers for advice about how she can deal with her midlife crisis. Here is an actual reader letter: Dear Sadie, I think you should laugh, love, and go with the flow - and do that with gusto! Don't sweat the small stuff. Kiss all the girls. Boys or whichever you prefer, but remember to laugh. - Bob. Pervert! If we allow laughing, then we'll have to allow cackling. Maybe even guffawing. I refuse to go down that disgusting slippery slope.

Caption: Pretend I'm Rosa. I say, "Gunther, let's roll down this hill!" What's the first think you think? Is this safe? No! You think, "Yes! How FUN!" I do? 'Cuz I'd say that's about a 147 degree slope. Seems risky … How 'bout you don't think at all? Plus, I believe there's a rule about going on the grass. Are those rocks?

Caption: A Well-Funded Militia. Another legislative massacre! The Herald-Spitoon. Senate killed gun safety measure. Bill dies despite overwhelming public support. Many irate citizens begin demanding background checks for those trying to purchase a congressman. It's time we stopped elected officials from falling into the wrong hands! The background checks would close the "Fundraising Show" loophole, in which dangerous politicians are openly sold. I'll take an assault senator! Lobbyists vow a nasty fight. Once you start tracking who owns what government stooge, it's a slippery slope to having our government stooges taken away!
