Caption: To Protect and to Sever. Baltimore police officers explain the death of an unarmed man whose spine was severed and voice box crushed during an arrest. This isn't what it looks like. While running from police, the individual in question began choking on a pretzel. The officer squeezed his throat and dislodged the snack, saving his life and the pretzel. A freak wind gust then violently blew the individual into a dumpster. Injury. Officers braved the intense but fleeting gale to drag him to safety, a moment taken completely out of context by that amateur video. Ok, any questions?

Caption: What I remember is Carl taking my arm, and walking with him outside the student union to my apartment. I feel so strange … I don't know how he knew where I lived. Maybe I guided us back. I remember feeling relieved that someone was helping me get to my place, a place of safety. Memories remain in cinematic flashes. The next thing I recall is sitting on my sofa, Carl in front of me removing my clothes. Let's get these off. I recall feeling embarrassed that I was naked and that my underarms stank. He said something about a bath. (This is a long form cartoon. To see next panels, use "Image Number" box at left and enter 124878.)

Caption: Sincerely Screwed. A Colorado judge recently ruled against the town's ban on fracking. "While the court appreciates the Longmont citizens' sincerely held beliefs about risks to their health and safety, the court does not find this is sufficient to completely devalue the state's interest." Bam! So ... "sincerely held beliefs" are protected when they are religious beliefs of a store that sells glue-on googly eyes ... Hobby Lobby. Sex is only for making baby box stores. But not when they are held by actual people and grounded in observable scientific reality. Pumphouse Brewery. Would it help if I called that the Devil? So if you want to keep fracking out of your community, you'd better pray. Works about as well as voting apparently.

Caption: Obama's Surgeon General pick is in jeopardy because the NRA objects to his support of basic gun safety measures. Guns don't kill people - safety laws do! All future nominees must pass an interview with the NRA. The LACK of guns in America is a public health crisis. Not enough conviction. Next! As Surgeon General, I'd develop a Gun Guide Pyramid and set a recommended daily allowance of ammo. Good, good. Make me Surgeon General or I'll shoot you. I think we have a winner.

Caption: PED X -ING. Hey, lawbreak- I mean, pedestrians! Here are some safety tips courtesy of your local police! Always cross in a crosswalk, even if you have to walk 50 yards up the street to do it. But I'm just going there! Shut up, or I'll fine you for jaywalking! Bagels. If the sign is blinking, that means don't walk, even if no cars are coming. Don't expect police to ticket drivers for not stopping at crosswalks. That would be a silly waste of resources. For maximum safety, consider taking a car, even if you're only going a few blocks. Finally, no more endangered pedestrians! BAM!

Caption: GAP'S REPUTATION COLLAPSE. Even after the recent garment factory collapse that killed 1,127 in Bangladesh, THE GAP - along with WALMART - refuses to sign a legally-binding agreement to improve safety conditions in the country. Cracks in the retailer's facade began to appear when making excuses about why it couldn't sign an enforceable measure. The U.S. is quite litigious. Heh-heh. KRRK! GAP. If warning signs are ignored, the brand could collapse, killing over 3,000 stores, including several hundred GAP KIDS and BABYGAPS. Ethical GAPS will remain open! The Ethical GAP. Sale! Death Polos. Steel-plated summer hats. Protection from sun, falling beams. As a Bangladeshi garment worker, what do you think of all this? I guess GAP just wants us to continue living in a BANANA REPUBLIC! Well, they DO own that.

"I won't stand for someone mocking the tragic deaths of my fellow Texans and out fellow Americans." (Actual quote.) People of Texas, rest assured that I will always protect you from those who would insult me. I mean - the victims of a terrible accident! This chapter on deflecting blame after a major tragedy is great stuff! Yeah, well, it only works for so long. Post - 9/11 Playbook.
