Caption: No. But … Rudy needs our help with his addiction to his mobile phone. That's no way to dress for an intervention. Oh. I thought we were doing and interdiction. No guns. So much less fun.

Caption: Don't tell anyone, but I'm pretty sure I saw a TR-38 last night. I was lounging on my roof, bathed in the supple blue glow of my iPad, iPhone, Kindle, Apple Watch, laptop and mini TV. Like ususal. Suddenly, I had the inexplicable urge to turn them all off. That's when it came into view: A huge, black, triangle floating right over me. It began to vibrate, and suddenly a single thought was projected into my head. "Keep at least one of these things off please. Your gigantic wattage is messing with our warp drive." Could've been swamp gas.

Caption: Donald Trump said he'd have run into that school shooting without a gun to stop it. I'm way ahead of you, Randy. I've already developed a first-person shooter based on the Call of Duty engine. You play Trump, all decked out in his usual black suit and red power tie. Video-game Trump has to personally take out all of America's enemies. He's armed with nothing but his uncouth tweets. Game has a bug, though. As soon as it starts, video-game Trump keeps getting deferments because of bone spurs. Call of deferments has a ring to it.

Caption: I'm not entirely sure I'm conscious, doc. It occurred to me last night, I am not an individual. I am a colony of 32 trillion individual living cells. Dr. Noodle … each of which lives, breathes, performs tasks, and quite possibly considers itself to be a conscious individual with free will. The thought reminded me of when I was in the army. Each of us was an individual cell focused on an individual task ... but before we knew it, because of the decisions made unbeknownst to any of us grunts ... the body of us, the colony we all comprised ... had marched across Europe, and swum across the Pacific, and liberated half the world ... maybe I prescribed you a little too much Cannabis. You may think you thought that thought, but you're just an antibody reflexively protecting the colony.

Caption: Triple espresso. Forget it, Uncle Mort. Let's face facts: You're not as young as you used to me. Too much caffeine can literally kill you. Poppycock! Do you know who you're talking to? When we stormed across Europe under Patton, my tank battalion got stuck in the mud during a torrential downpour. Arty Lang switched my canteen full of rainwater with one full of tank gas. So I replaced his tank's timing belt with tree bark and dental floss. That big galoot and I were always pranking each other like that. It was different times. Don't judge. What were we talking about, again? You were ordering the gentle flower chamomile tea.

Caption: Uncle Mort, you fought in Korea, right? You think that war will start up again? Not if I can help it. It was the morning of July 27, nineteen hundred and fifty-three. I was pinned down on Pork Chop Hill. My bazooka had run out of ammo. All I could find to load into it was a stuffed panda bear. I loaded it and fired that bear into the maw of the enemy. It struck one of them atop the noggin. Moments later, the armistice was signed. Every July 27th, I awaken at dawn and chuck that same panda at the first person I see ... and the armistice holds. You're welcome, America.

Caption: I just read an article at Candorville.com that shows Americans are less likely than other people to travel to another country. Tap tap tap tap tap. Clearly they're talking about the younger generations. In my day, we were well-traveled. Many of us visited France, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, the Philippines, Japan, the Solomon Islands, Palau Islands, China, Korea, Formosa, Egypt, Vietnam, Lebanon, Cuba, Thailand, Cambodia ... I think the article means travel for non-military reasons. What's the difference?! Travel is travel!

Caption: Quadruple expresso for all of America. What do you mean, Uncle Mort? I mean Donald Trump has slashed vital programs to pay for a 10% increase in military spending. But we were already spending more than the next seven nations combined! We already had everything we needed to defend ourselves! There can be only one reason to slash so many programs in order to increase military spending by $54 billion ... That reason is if you know you're going to start a war. Why am I the only one "waked" to this obvious fact? The term is "woke," Uncle Mort. No! I'm awake right now! "Woke" isn't past tense anymore. Stop gassing me! "Gaslighting."

Caption: You are not allowed to join the army, little buddy. You don't want me getting hurt in war? I just don't think someone who's never won an arm-wrestling match in his life has any business taking on terrorists. For your information, you're looking at the World Lightweight Champion of Thumb Wrestling, fourteen years running. Not at all the same thing. And my mom said playing video games would never take me anywhere.

Caption: Do you think I'm army material, Randy? I think you'd be a real asset to the army. Really? Pain is an asset, because otherwise, how would one appreciate pleasure? Loneliness is an asset, for otherwise how would one appreciate love? I think boot camp would be much cheaper than a gym membership. Death is an asset. How else would one cherish life?

Caption: The Afghanistan war officially ended one month ago. The "Af-What-Istan what" did what? What? That's what I asked you. I said, the Afghanistan war ended. You know, the war we've been fighting for the last thirteen years! We've been fighting a war for the last 13 years? That's odd ... I don't know anyone who was in it. Did we win? Holy Moses. Woulda been cool if it had kept going for 101 years, then it would be a world record. You're the best argument there is for bringing back the draft. "Draft"? You mean beer?

Caption: What does the world need most this time of year, minion? Make no sudden movements. It needs to not feel guilty about all the broken New Year's resolutions. I'm not following you. I've created and artificial intelligence program that combs everything posted by or about you on social media ... and then decides your New Year's resolution for you. For instance, yours is to ask out Mbege Anyango from Cameroon. The A.I. was determined she's your soul mate. I've ... I mean the A.I. ... has taken the liberty of booking your flight and deducting all fares and fees from your checking. But I don't feel like going. The problem isn't making resolutions ... the problem is nobody keeps them. Your app doesn't solve that. It doesn't? Are you sure? What if I told you the A.I. also controls a used military drone I bought off eBay? Cameroon sounds lovely.

Caption: All you young people keep whining about the country being "divided." You don’t know what "divided" is. Grandmother Cohen was a general in the Union army. Her sister was a confederate general. They didn’t let women fight in the civil war. Of course not. But as luck would have it, GREAT grandmother Cohen was the best fake-beard-maker in the land. Nobody ever dared ask "Stonewall Jackson" why "he" often wore his hair in a bun. The history books always leave out the best parts.

Caption: Were you really supposed to be in the 1980 Olympics, Sadie? I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT! But you're the one who brought it up. That was just to remind you there are aspects of my life that you don’t have clearance to know. Sorry … "clearance" is jargon from my time in THE SERVICE. Service? Which service? I don't want to talk about it.
