Caption: Authoritarian Funnies. This week: "Kettling." During protests at Trump's inauguration, police used a tactic called "kettling": Rounding up a whole city block to make mass arrests. Anyone on the same block as a rioter is probably guilty of something. Now hundreds face felony charges call it the "trawling" approach to justice. Catch of the day! Journalist. Peaceful protester. Legal observer. Set garbage can on fire. It's like rounding up everyone at the supermarket because somebody slipped turkey bacon down his pants. If you're so innocent, what were you doing in the meat department? Why not apprehend entire cities? You are all under arrest for bank robbery! Justice served! Police line. Do not cross.

Caption: Part of the problem … is nobody wants to hurt each other anymore. In the good old days … they used to treat them very, very rough. Knock the crap out of them … I promise you, I will pay for the legal fees. Love Not Hate. Black Lives Matter. Actual Trump quotes about protesters at his rallies.

Caption: Obama Nominates fern to Supreme Court. This is a moderate nominee that can bring us all together. Who doesn't like ferns? Legal experts weigh in. The fern has a limited voting record, so it's unclear how it would rule on abortion. I mean, it's not male or female. It has spores. Punditspew. Republicans respond. We will not vote on any life form nominated by Obama! Democratic voters are unenthused. I don't know. I'm just not feeling the fern.

Caption: Thanks to a Supreme Court ruling, companies have quietly added language to contracts the effectively ends people's right to sue. Fine print no one has time to read. We may elect to resolve claim by arbitration. Our justice system is being replaced with a private, corporate-friendly alternative. The people judging these cases are often friends of the company! Eh, if it's not about goofy politicians or sex, I don't care. What if ordinary citizens were given the legal powers corporations now have? Before you hire me, you must sign this agreement to appear in a secret court judged by my homies. Our fine print would be awesome. Disputes: The fat cats at Globoplundimaxx agree to reimburse me for any erroneous charges x 1,000 plus $1 million to my mom for her judging services, plus a bowl of M&M's with the green ones removed under penalty of ... Damn arbitration clauses!

Caption: Bosom Baddies. New York is cracking down on the painted ladies of Times Square. Can you send some support? (Toplessness is legal in NY). Officers explain threat. Loose bazoombas are an affront to morality! Now excuse me while I put this guy in a chokehold. Cigs. The mayor is considering closing the plaza and letting cars back in. This way, tourists will only be exposed to speeding traffic. Maybe we just need to attach breasts to whatever needs regulating. Gasp! That's a danger to society!

Caption: Tissue-Gate. A radical organization has been caught doing ethically questionable things on video. YouTube. Many Americans are outraged that a group would resort to such tactics to further its extremist agenda. This is an affront to basic human decency! The political fallout could be huge. These people are dangerous and have no respect for life. Yes, anti-abortion groups have outdone themselves. These extremists are misrepresenting Planned Parenthood's legal delivery of tissue for life-saving stem cell research! Well, I'm pro-science, and I vote!

Caption: The Right's Rights. Some people are outraged by recent Supreme Court rulings. (Man) + (Woman) only. I've been denied the right to deny the right to marry! League for Liberty to Limit Liberties. Now people are no longer free to be prohibited from buying health insurance! This will only lead to more businesses being forced to bake gay wedding cakes! My life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness depend on denying health insurance claims! The Founding Fathers would be appalled!

Caption: Thought experiment: Al Qaeda admits to torturing U.S. captives. How do American's respond? Taliban shocker. Rectal feeding of Navy Seals. I'm sure they were just patriots defending their caliphate! Army Ranger chained to ceiling, kept awake for a week. That's enhanced interrogation, not torture! An American was doused with water and left to die of hypothermia on a dungeon floor. Al Qaeda torture. In fairness, you have to consider the whole context of the time. U.S. troops say they were locking in coffin-like boxes and endured countless near-drownings. The Taliban says it was legal, so it's ok with me.

Caption: Sincerely Screwed. A Colorado judge recently ruled against the town's ban on fracking. "While the court appreciates the Longmont citizens' sincerely held beliefs about risks to their health and safety, the court does not find this is sufficient to completely devalue the state's interest." Bam! So ... "sincerely held beliefs" are protected when they are religious beliefs of a store that sells glue-on googly eyes ... Hobby Lobby. Sex is only for making baby box stores. But not when they are held by actual people and grounded in observable scientific reality. Pumphouse Brewery. Would it help if I called that the Devil? So if you want to keep fracking out of your community, you'd better pray. Works about as well as voting apparently.

Caption: Buffer Buffoonery. The Supreme Court recently struck down a "buffer zone" law for abortion clinics while having its own protester-free zone that is many times larger. Massachusetts law: 35 ft. around clinics. Supreme Court buffer. Shouldn't the justices be as exposed to the "free marketplace of ideas" as a woman seeking an abortion? Repent. Your honor, please come to our Legal Crisis Center for some free counseling! They'd just have to take their chances and hope none of the activists are violent. Constitution killer! We the People. Things would change real fast. it being self-evident that no one should have to put up with this s#*t ... we're reversing our ruling on buffer zones.

Caption: Get Your Words' Worth. John Roberts on campaign finance: The government may no more restrict how many candidates a donor may support than it may tell a newspaper how many candidates it may endorse. Like, duh! So, dollars are equivalent to words, which makes exactly as much sense in reverse. That'll be three pronouns, please. As the owner of a large book collection worth billions of words, would you consider donating some to my campaign? Vote me. Of course, Roberts isn't very good at recognizing absurdity. I'm just saying money talks, so it's not corrupting. What's so hard to understand here?

Caption: Obama's Surgeon General pick is in jeopardy because the NRA objects to his support of basic gun safety measures. Guns don't kill people - safety laws do! All future nominees must pass an interview with the NRA. The LACK of guns in America is a public health crisis. Not enough conviction. Next! As Surgeon General, I'd develop a Gun Guide Pyramid and set a recommended daily allowance of ammo. Good, good. Make me Surgeon General or I'll shoot you. I think we have a winner.

Caption: Everyone's talking about marijuana legalization. It's time to … know your potheads. The pundit who did it in school and is above it now. Ho ho, silly old me! The Ron Paul fan. End the drug war! … and the FED! … and the Civil Rights Act! The medically-licensed. Booyah! The N.O.R.M.L. normal. Come with me to Amsterdam tonight on PBS! The incarcerated. Oddly enough, not white. Sigh.

Caption: Shooting Backwards. Pro-gun groups are celebrating the fact that one year after Newtown, guns are less regulated that before. 70 eased restrictions. 39 tightened. Ain't she a beaut? It's like we responded to a drunk driving epidemic by putting kegs at every intersection. The right to bear brews shall not be infringed! Braaap! Glug-N-Go. "Rollover Red". At this rate, we're just a tragedy away from no regulation at all. I want a shoulder-fired RPG launcher for Christmas. Wish list. Those won't be legal until after the next massacre, dear. Makes you wonder who's actually in charge here - gun owner or gun? Dace, you will donate your children's college fund to the NRA. Okay. You will awaken with no memory of this conversation, Dave.

Caption: LEGAL HORSEPLAY. Looking to pass a law that won't fly with the public? Maybe something racist, or otherwise unconstitutional? Trojan Tommy. Attorney-at-Law. Come on down to your Trojan Horse Source! A satisfied customer: I wanted to overturn Roe v. Wade, but Tommy has this great idea about regulating clinics to "protect women's health." Now I just practice looking concerned and leave the rest to him! Another satisfied customer: I wanted to make it harder for minorities to vote. Tommy came up with voter ID laws, which help to prevent those people - I mean, prevent fraud. Genius! The courts are stacked with right-wing judges, so there's no better time. Bill. GIDDYUP!

Caption: Good news: There's only a handful of people left in the U.S. who seriously oppose gay marriage! Bad news: They all sit on the Supreme Court. Surely they have lofty reasons for objecting. Let's ask Scalia. Homosexual sodomy? Come on. For 200 years it was criminal in every state. (Actual quote from Oct. 2012) Okay, then clearly he's try to protect our constitutional right to condemn gay sex. It's right here! Section 6. Each citizen shall be free to exclaim "Ew, pervy!" at the thought of hot and sweaty patriot-on-patriot (or Lady-upon-Lady) acts of sexual congrefs. So let's compromise: Gays can marry and Scalia can come to the ceremony and voice his concerns. Any objections to this marriage? Yes! It's grody! Thank you, sir. I now pronounce you legally wed.

Caption: Slowpoke. Year of the Mombies. The "Protect Life Act," recently introduced in congress, says doctors can let a pregnant woman die if saving her life kills the fetus. Blastocyst = life. Fully-grown woman: Expendable fetus-mobile! But if pregnant women don't count among the living ... technically that makes them undead. Baby ... want ... Chunky ... Monkey ... Pick ... les ... Which raises important legal questions, such as: Do undead baby-incubator zombies need to pay taxes? Report all W-2 income UNLESS you are but a vessel for an actual human being. And clearly pregnancy tests will be required at the polls so that only living women vote: I'm afraid you'll have to pee on the stick, ma'am, before you can proceed to the voting booth.

Caption: Slowpoke. For a self-proclaimed literalist, Judge Scalia seems to see an awful lot of things in the 2nd amendment. "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Obviously this does not allow firearms for felons or the mentally ill, or in schools, or government buildings, or concealed or "dangerous and unusual" weapons ... But handguns are a right! DUH! Where does all this special insight come from? Our experts have concluded that Scalia belongs to the RUMPIST school of legal thought. Majority Opinion. His rulings come LITERALLY out of his ass. As you can see, a handgun fits neatly within the confines of Scalia's posterior. Censored. If it's in there, it's in the CONSTUTITION! Yes, we can thank Scalia for protecting us from that scourge of the courts - THE ACTIVIST JUDGE! Excise me everyone, I need to make a "narrow interpretation." Men's Room. Ah, just as the framers intended!
