Caption: Today on the Ask Sadie Show, we'll be addressing one single topic: Wondering. In my day, when a body said I wonder why dust bunnies are called dust bunnies, it led to all sorts of delightful speculation. We could while away hours debating whether it was a marketing ploy by big broom ... or whether it dated back to Napoleon, who had a fetish for dirty rabbits. And if we were lucky, opinions could get so heated that fisticuffs would ensue. Wondering is just one of many lovely human experiences utterly ruined by Google.

Will we all have nanites coursing through our bodies repairing any damage and connecting us all to a hive mind? Will we have no bodies at all, and instead be sentient programs we uploaded to the cloud to escape some global catastrophe? Will we still like pizza? Pizza is eternal.

Caption: I've realized something: It's likely that there's only one way for mankind to reach the stars in our lifetimes. Do tell. Scientists believe we'll be able to upload our minds in just 30 years. That means NASA could upload everyone's mind to a robot, and launch it into space. We wouldn't need life support. We wouldn't be affected by radiation or anything. We could even sleep for the 100 years or so it took to get to the nearest star. Then that robot could build more robots and download our minds to them. But we wouldn't have private parts. Mankind isn't mankind if it doesn't have privates. I think that's one for the philosophers.

Caption: Wellness Center - Exercise Class. You know, human and robots are very similar when it comes to wellness. We both need to practice good hygiene to avoid viruses. We should all take care of our minds and our bodies. Humans and robots alike function optimally only when we have well-maintained mechanics and a healthy processor. Then to ensure we stay charged during the day, we should power down for eight hours at night. And of course, we all need to be careful about the things we take in. I agree! Whatever I download goes straight to my chips!

Caption: What's your question for "Ask Sadie"? What's with that senseless riot in Baltimore? What do you mean? America has a long history of self-destructive riots in response to police brutality. It's senseless to call it senseless. A city is like a human body. If you feed a body an awful diet of abuse and unaccountable cops, that body's eventually going to have a massive coronary. In short: Learn your history! And eat oatmeal! Oat ... What? What are you talking about?

Caption: You can talk to a dog until you're blue in the face, but he won't understand any of it. Oh, a dog can be taught the meanings of a few words, but his understanding of language is very limited. But dogs are experts at reading human body language and facial expressions. For example, when I look at Roscoe like this, he knows I want him to bring me the newspaper. However, just because he knows, doesn't mean he cares.

Caption: Robot Actors Guild. Robot actors are replacing human actors in movies and TV! And just like human actors, it gets harder for robots to find roles as they get older and their bodies start to fall apart. Casting. Oops, sorry that arm keeps falling off. They don't make replacement components for may anymore. Uh, I think we'll cast a younger robot. The harder it is to get parts, the harder it is to get parts!

Caption: The Robotics Department. It says here that these guys completely replace all the cells in their bodies every seven years! Wow! What a slow upgrade cycle! If we don't replace all our parts every six months we become obsolete! It makes you wonder why they're in charge! Yeah, like they expect us to remember thousands of gigabytes of data while they forget their passwords! (Published originally on April 19, 2006)

Good lord … Do you know what this means, Rosencrantz? That you're an alien who's stolen my earliest memory as prelude to absorbing my body and soul so you can finally become human? Feel free to say you don't know what things mean, Rosencrantz.
