Caption: Burned in Memory. My dad and I didn't have a lot in common. I was an artist and writer, and he had a Ph.D. in plant pathology. He was a scientist with the U.S. Forest Service. My early childhood had a heavy emphasis on Smokey the Bear. We had lots of Smokey paraphernalia around. My first book was a Little Golden Book about him. I still recall the opening words: It was a bright May morning ... Smokey the Bear. Dad once went on a fire tanker crash investigation. It was a B-17, and it happened in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. He showed slides of the pilot who was ejected through the window of the plane. A man doing his job. I can't forget it. Horrific. We did talk a lot thought, mostly while we were fishing. I remember many conversations when we were somewhere out in the woods. One time we were fishing around a development in Oregon that was built right in the trees. There are a lot of those communities there, as well as here in California. He said, very matter-of-factly, This is going to burn down someday. The development is still there, and is regularly threatened. I envisioned the fire spewing across the homes and the golf courses. It was horrifying even to think about. Now thousands have lived it here. To this day, I still think about that B-17 fire tanker pilot and how he gave his life. Think of how many lives he must have saved.
