Caption: The Expanding Universe. In 1929 astronomer Edwin Hubble studied light waves from distant galaxies and concluded that the universe is continuously expanding in all directions. This work was part of the basis for the "big bang" theory -- the idea that the expansion began from a single point with a huge explosion.
