Hey
Look! was a key part of Harvey
Kurtzman's development
as a cartoonist and, according to publisher William Gaines, it
was the critical
factor in his gaining work at EC Comics
where he went on to found MAD Magazine.
|
|
Published in the late 1940's, Hey
Look! was the first cartoon work over
which Kurtzman had complete editorial control. In Hey
Look!,
Kurtzman refined his storytelling, art style and form of humor.
The
images were created on a freelance basis and distributed primarily
in
comic book titles published by Timely Comics, the forerunner
to
Marvel Comics, where Stan Lee was the editor, and
Toby Comics,
published by "L'il Abner" cartoonist Al Capp.
